Re-roofing or renovating your building is a great opportunity to update your overall efficiency. New technologies in industrial and commercial roofing give businesses who don’t mind accepting change a change to slash overhead and repair costs while increasing their overall safety for years to come. TPO and EPDM roofing have become two of the most common types of new roofing for exactly that reason. Get a leg up on your competitive environment with one of these materials.

TPO Roofing

TheCommercial Roofing most quickly-growing type of commercial roofing, thermoplastic polyolefin (“TPO”), is held in high regard for its impermeable water seal, UV-resistant design, and ability to reduce heating costs. Its ease of installation and dynamic cost-cutting capability makes it suitable for a wide variety of applications, from high-tech data centers to grocery storage facilities.

EPDM Roofing

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer roofing, or EPDM roofing, is a thermoplastic membrane just like TPO — one key difference is that it’s made of black rubber. You might have heard that flat and white is the only way to go for commercial roofing, but there are exceptions. EPDM has relative advantages as well, though. The process by which it’s made — vulcanization — makes it cheaper, more durable, and better-equipped to handle weather than many other commercial roofing varieties.

PVC Roofing

The third thermoplastic roofing membrane to consider is PVC roofing. Like TPO roofing, PVC is heat-weldable, strong, and durable. It has one weakness relative to TPO, however: PVC naturally becomes somewhat brittle in cold weather. Manufacturers offset this tendency by adding chemicals called “plasticizers” to PVC. UV exposure degrades the plasticizers, turning them into food sources for mold. As a result, PVC roofing may require greater overall maintenance.

Single-Ply Roof Coatings

You can apply roof coatings to any of these roofing systems to preserve them. As natural water-, chemical-, and UV-proof coatings age and begin to lose effectiveness, these coatings will restore their function.

Metal Roof Coatings

Metal roofs can be reinforced through application of a coating. A metal roof coating creates a layer quite like TPO: many are reflective, rust-resistant, and sealed. One thing roof coatings can’t do, however, is give your roof the fundamental durability of a true single-ply thermoplastic membrane.
