When your heating and cooling system has a heat pump, its function is critical for your home’s comfort, keeping your space cool in the summer and cozy during winter. When heat pumps are in top shape, your equipment will also run at the most energy-efficient levels. Here are three tasks to remember for proper operation and maintenance.

Tips for Operating & Maintaining a Heat Pump

Filter Maintenance

air conditioner repairCheck filters monthly to ensure there is no buildup of dust, dirt, and grime that would interfere with air flow. Clean or change them when necessary so your system doesn’t have to work harder to stay at stable temperatures. For filters that require replacements, changing them every four to six weeks is recommended. For higher-end types that only require cleaning, every six months is sufficient.

Outside Equipment

All outdoor components should be wiped down regularly, especially if they are exposed to the elements. Keep heat pumps and compressors away from any clutter, trees, plants, and shrubs that can crowd them and inhibit operation. In fall and winter, remove snow, ice, and leaves carefully and use warm water to melt frost.

Also, check that gutters and downspouts are properly angled and not draining near your heat pump. Make sure your equipment is correctly elevated, and that there is enough clearance around it for cleaning and repair.

Professional Maintenance

Your entire heating and cooling system should be serviced annually, allowing experts to check on everything from ducts and vents to coils and other critical hardware. They can inspect for adequate air flow and will spot any refrigerant leaks. HVAC contractors will lubricate and tighten parts, and if something needs repair, they can determine the extent of the damage.
