Today, it’s easy to take the ability to see a perfect reflection for granted. But people didn’t always have easy access to mirrors. Even though simple versions already existed over 6,000 years ago, the modern mirror wasn’t created until 1835.

An Overview of Mirrors

Ancient Times

The earliest man-made mirrors were made of polished stone from black volcanic glass obsidian, which were found in Turkey. The Ancient Egyptians used polished copper to produce round mirrors, whereas the inhabitants of Central and South America used polished metal. In China, metal alloys were also commonly used as well as bronze. During these ancient times, only the wealthy could afford to own a mirror.

Middle Ages

mirrorsGlass mirrors were first produced in the third century, replacing the use of polished bronze and copper. However, convex mirrors weren’t discovered until the 14th century when glassblowing was invented. For the glass to cast a proper reflection, it must be coated. This was done using silver, gold, chrome, and later mercury amalgam. By the 16th century, mirrors were manufactured mostly in Venice, but they were still expensive and available for only the richest individuals.

Modern Times

German inventor Justus von Liebig developed the silvered-glass mirror that is used today. In 1835, he added a thin metallic layer onto the glass by chemically reducing silver nitrate. At this time, the manufacturing became easier and more affordable, allowing ordinary people to own a looking glass. Today, mirrors are made by depositing aluminum onto the glass.
