Pool liners are vinyl coverings that overlay a swimming pool’s structure to prevent water from escaping into the ground. It is an excellent alternative to concrete, which is commonly used but is also more expensive. If you choose to use pool liners, you should look out for the following problems that may indicate the need for you to have it replaced.

3 Signs That You Need to Replace Your Pool Liners

1. Cracks & Tears

The combination of pool chemicals and the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays make your pool liner susceptible to damage such as cracks and tears, which can grow bigger over time. If it is less than three years old, you should be able to have the damage fixed. If it is older than that, you might need a new one, as patching it will only be a temporary fix. If there are numerous cracks or tears, you should replace it regardless of its age.

Exposure to chemicals and harsh UV rays will naturally cause your pool liner to fade. However, most products nowadays are designed to resist fading, so the process should be slow. If you notice significant fading, the plasticizers added to the vinyl sheet might have deteriorated, causing its colors to fade fast and making the material more brittle. These chemicals cannot be restored, so you need to get a new liner.

3. Water Loss

This problem can be caused by damage such as cracks and tears, or by the material stretching and sagging to the point where it becomes difficult to slip the top of the liner back into its tracks. Water leaks not only waste money, but they can also corrode the pool’s metal walls or erode the soil that supports them. Monitor the water level for a week; if it drops more than an inch, you need to have the liner checked.
