Whether you’ve visited multiple scrap metal yards or enjoy restoring cars on your own, you know there are various types of metal out there. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals make up a vast majority of auto parts, and it’s important to know the differences between them. So, below ferrous and non-ferrous metals are contrasted so that you know the advantages and disadvantages of each when choosing your next scrap metal parts.

Ferrous vs. Non-Ferrous Metal

What is Ferrous Metal?

scrap metalA “ferrous” material has iron in it. They’re one of the most frequently used and recycled metals, particularly within the U.S. Some ferrous metals are steel, cast iron, and sheet iron. Vehicles are also made of ferrous materials, which is why you’ll often find this type of scrap metal in salvage yards. Ferrous metal is also more affordable since it’s common when compared to other materials. The downside is that they rust more easily due to the presence of iron.

What Is Non-Ferrous Metal?

A non-ferrous metal is any type that does not contain iron. Since these metals are less common, they tend to be more expensive and valuable than ferrous scrap metal. Due to their higher value, they’re better for recycling. Copper, brass, stainless steel, and aluminum are just some of the non-ferrous metals. While these materials are still susceptible to rusting, they do so in a much slower manner than ferrous metals.

How Can You Tell the Difference Between the Two Metals?

If you’re searching through a scrap metal yard, it can be difficult to quickly tell which metals are ferrous and which aren’t. To make the process easier, bring a magnet with you. Due to the iron, ferrous metals will be attracted to the magnet. Non-ferrous metals won’t be.
