As the weather starts to get warmer and winter fades away, the time for fun in the summer sun gets closer. For pool owners, that means opening the pool and getting it set for the season. Ensuring your swimming hole is clean and ready to go requires a few important steps. Here are four things to do when opening your backyard oasis.

Tips for Getting the Pool Ready for Summer

1. Connect Your Equipment

First, set up your filter, pump, and heater. Make sure ladders, diving boards, and hand rails are installed and secure, and reattach any other accessories. Hook up your automatic pool cleaner as well. Inspect for broken or rusty hardware, and test that everything is in working order. You may need to lubricate O-rings and seals. If you used winterized plugs during the cold season, swap them out for the normal ones.

2. Test Water Chemistry

Refill water and check pH levels with test strips and a test kit. Find out what your pool’s alkalinity is as well as chlorine, calcium, and stabilizer levels. Don’t add chemicals until you get this information, so you know what to adjust. The winter weather will interfere with chemical amounts, and no swimming should occur until water is back in balance. Also, ensure your components haven’t expired. If so, purchase a new kit.

3. Vacuum

poolsVacuum your pool thoroughly, even if you had a cover on all winter. Not only does this ensure all debris and grime are eliminated, but it also helps get rid of bacteria and algae on your pool walls and floor. Begin cleaning at the shallow end and then move toward the deeper side. Run the filtration system overnight to fully cleanse all dirt and spores.

4. Shock Your Pool

The final step for eliminating any remaining bacteria, algae, and contaminants is to shock the pool. Gauge two pounds of shock for every 10,000 gallons of water. If you aren’t sure about amounts or you don’t feel it has been cleared thoroughly, call your pool service professional for help.
