Finding your wedding dress is the first step in putting together your wedding day look. Next you need to meet with your seamstress to coordinate alterations, which involves several fittings. As the premier alterations experts in New York City’s Upper East Side, the team at Wo's Custom Tailoring has executed quality work for more than 40 years and can help you coordinate your dress fittings.

5 Steps Needed to Perfect Your Wedding Dress

1. First Wedding Dress Fitting

During your first wedding dress fitting, consider the way the fabric falls, the stitching, embroidery, and any additional details you need altered. If you have specific alterations in mind, this is the time to let your seamstress know; for example, if you want the skirt of the dress to be looser for more comfortable movement.

2. Taking Your Measurements

Following the initial try-on, the seamstress will take measurements of your body to adjust the dress accordingly. To get an accurate fit, you should be wearing the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear the day of the wedding.

With the information they gathered, your seamstress is now prepared to make alterations. Depending on the complexity of the dress, adjustments, and your seamstress’ schedule, modifications can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Schedule your alterations at least a month in advance to ensure they are complete in time for your big day.

4. Second Fitting & Additional Adjustments

Be prepared to attend at least one to two additional fittings after your initial measurements are taken. This is to account for a precise fit and to make sure you are happy with the changes that are made.

5. Final Fitting

During your last fitting, bring in all your  accessories and a close friend or family member to give you a second opinion. They may be able to spot a few things that you initially overlooked. Your seamstress will tell you how to properly put the dress on and instruct you on the best way to store and transport it. They will also remove last-minute wrinkles or stains and tell you how to maneuver in and out of it.
