Maintaining a septic tank properly not only keeps it working well, but it can elongate its lifespan and reduce the need for frequent repairs. Sanitrol Septic Services has been providing residential and commercial drain cleaning and septic services to the New Haven and surrounding counties since 1984, and they have a few maintenance tips on how to keep your septic system at its most efficient.

What can you do to ensure your system is in top shape?

  • Schedule a regular septic pumping for your tank. A septic tank should be pumped every three to five years, depending on its size and the number of people in your household. You should also have a regular schedule for inspections of your system as well. Keep a record of all inspections, repairs, and maintenance work.
  • Mind your drains and toilets. Don’t pour harsh chemicals, grease, paint, or paint thinners down your drains. Doing so can affect the way the system operates. In addition, don’t flush toilet wipes, cat litter, cigarette butts, or dirt down the toilet. These materials will not decompose and you will risk clogging your system.
  • Don’t park vehicles or build structures on top of your drain field. Excessive weight can cause damage to the pipes underneath or even cause them to collapse, and this can lead to costly repairs.
  • Don’t introduce too much water into your system. If you pour excess water into your drains—emptying your pool, for example—it can cause an overflow that may back up into your home.
  • Remove trees and large shrubs from your drain field. Plants with deep roots can grow and clog your system. Make sure you have only grass or any other plant with shallow roots around your drain field.

Proper maintenance of your septic system will keep it working effectively and help you avoid costly repairs. Call Sanitrol Septic Services at (203) 315-3202 for your next septic cleaning, or visit their website for more information.
