Before a garage door installation, it’s important to take precise measurements of the opening to ensure the new fixture will fit correctly. If the dimensions are off, it could lead to faulty operation when opening and closing the door and potential safety hazards. Below is a brief guide to taking measurements.

How to Take the Correct Measurements for a Garage Door Installation

1. Width

Measure the door from the bottom, top, and center, using the widest dimension to determine the width. Place a tape measure on the left side of the frame and extend it to the right side. Record all measurements in feet and inches.

2. Height

To determine height, place a ladder at the opening, making sure the ground is level. Extend the tape from the floor to the finished top of the frame. If the ground is uneven, you might have to take measurements from the center, as well as the right and left side. Use the tallest of the measurements as the height.

3. Depth

When opening the garage door, the space needs to be big enough to accommodate the panel. To determine garage depth, measure from the opening to the back wall of the garage. To ensure the door won’t bang into the back of the room when retracting, add 15 inches to the measurement for manual doors and 18 inches for electricity-operated installations.

4. Borders

There should be enough room inside the garage for the vertical track and additional mechanical components. Measure from the right side opening to the edge of the garage and do the same with the left side. Ideally, for a single-car garage, there should be at least 3.75 inches of space on each side.

5. Headroom

When opening the garage door, the panel slides on rollers into framework installed on the ceiling. There has to be enough room for the operation, otherwise opening and closing the door could cause frequent jams or severe property damage. The space between the door opening and ceiling is called the headroom. You’ll need a stepladder to reach the area to measure it.
