If you are staying at an assisted living facility, you probably see a wide variety of personnel walking around the premises. Some of these individuals might be certified nursing assistants and others may be resident assistants. While they both do many similar tasks around the facility, their jobs differ in a few ways.

Certified Nursing Assistants

Certified nursing assistants tend to the basic needs of residents. They may help them eat, take baths, and get dressed every day. If the clients have limited mobility, CNAs may help them move around the assisted living facility via a walker or wheelchair. CNAs may also reposition bedridden patients, empty bedpans, take vital signs, clean patient areas, and bring clients things they need.

Certified nursing assistants are required to take a short course to learn about basic nursing principles. Community colleges, technical schools, and some hospitals offer training. After they complete their education, they have to pass an exam to become certified.

Resident Assistants

Resident assistants perform many of the same tasks that certified nursing assistants do, including helping residents use the toilet, take baths, get dressed, and eat food. They may also do administrative tasks at an assisted living facility, like answering the phone and greeting visitors.

While resident assistants aren’t required to have any formal training, most facilities prefer that they at least have a high school diploma. It’s important for these assistants to be friendly, patient, and in shape enough to perform physical tasks, like lifting and transporting residents.
