Synthetic materials have long been used to provide mankind with benefits natural products can’t. One of the oldest of these substances is polyvinyl chloride—also known as polyvinyl, vinyl, or PVC. This lightweight but strong plastic is often used in construction applications and is the third-most widely produced polymer. In homes, it is most often utilized as a low-maintenance fence material.

While PVC is practically everywhere today, its creation was a mistake. It was discovered by accident on two different occasions in the 19th century. French physicist and chemist Henri Victor Regnault and German Eugen Baumann noticed the solid white polymer after flasks of vinyl chloride gas had been exposed to sunlight. However, PVC wouldn’t be patented until 1913, when German inventor Friedrich Heinrich August Klatte discovered the material through the polymerization of vinyl chloride with sunlight.

fenceEven still, PVC didn’t become a popular material until BFGoodrich industrial scientist Waldo Semon plasticized the brittle material and convinced manufacturers it could be used as a water-resistant coating for fabrics. This helped expand the range of products in which PVC was used.

By WWII, it became a heavily demanded material, replacing the primary insulation on military ships. Over the next few decades, an increasing number of companies began to use the polymer in their products, boosting its demand worldwide.

As PVC became more refined and durable, its applications expanded to the building and construction industry. Today, the plastic is resistant to light, chemicals, corrosion, and extreme temperatures—making it one of the largest-selling commodities worldwide. However, one of its best uses is in the fence and deck industry, as it will outlive materials like wood and steel without any additional maintenance or cost.
