From repairing storm damage to improving home comfort, there are plenty of reasons to outfit your property with replacement windows. Before installing new fixtures, it’s important to take measurements of the window frames. Otherwise, the windows could be too big or small for the space, leading to improper installation, diminished security, and potential property damage.

Before Installing Replacement Windows, Follow These 3 Tips to Measure the Frames

1. Measure Between the Jambs to Determine Width

When measuring the width of the window frame, you might be tempted to place the tape measure at the window’s trim strip or parting beads. Doing so will get an inaccurate reading, so measure between the jambs at the top, middle, and bottom of the frame. For precise measurements, remove the liners first. When ordering windows, let the narrowest of the measurements serve as the width.

2. Measure From the Top of the Sill to the Top of the Frame for Height

Cincinnati-Ohio-windowWhen measuring the frame for the replacement window height, place the tape measure at the part of the window sill closest to the inner part of the window. From there, extend the tape to the top of the frame. There could be slight differences in height throughout, so take measurements from the center as well as the right and left sides. The shortest of the dimensions should serve as the window height.

3. Strive For 3 ¼ Inches for Opening Depth

When determining depth, the only part of the window you need to measure is from the outside blind stop strip to the inside window trim. To ensure the frame is strong enough for the new installation, the opening depth should be at least 3 ¼ inches between the two parts. The other parts holding the old window in place will be removed when the new one is installed.
