Visiting a dentist regularly is a great way to keep up with your oral health. As part of your biannual appointment, you will have your teeth professionally cleaned. While this is a common procedure, many are still unsure what teeth cleaning entails. That is why Dr. Richard A. Brunmeier, DDS, P.C., in Lincoln, NE, shares what you can expect.

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning Appointment?

1. Plaque Removal

The first step of the process includes an overall examination. Your dental hygienist will use a small mirror and overhead light to check the general condition of your mouth. They will note any inflammation, discoloration, or plaque build-up. Then they will use a scaler, a small, handheld tool with a pointed end, to gently scrape away that plaque. This process is pain-free, though you will be able to feel the scaler as it moves across or between your teeth.

Once the plaque has been scraped away, the next step in your teeth cleaning appointment is brushing. Hygienists use a high-powered electric device; you'll notice the noise from the machine, but the process is completely comfortable. Once you've chosen your desired toothpaste flavor, each tooth will be gently polished using the brush. During the process, your hygienist will also suck away any excess saliva using a small suction tube.

3. Flossing

Just as you do at home, following the tooth brushing is the flossing. This is the quickest step in the process, as your hygienist works swiftly between each tooth. Depending on the state of your teeth, they need more than one pass through. Those who do not floss regularly may experience minor bleeding of the gums. This will stop within a minute or two and is nothing to be concerned about.
