If you’re new to the world of Magic: The Gathering™, you may still be figuring out how to play this popular card game. Per the game’s official guidelines, there are several formats in which it can be played competitively. While the broader format categories are limited and constructed, they are further divided into many subcategories. With help from the team at Comics Elite in Indianapolis, IN, you can get an introduction to these formats. Below the comic shop shares what the different categories of the game have to offer.

A Comic Shop on Constructed Formats

1. Standard

This is one of the most popular ways players in formal tournaments prefer to show their skills. The most recent standard play set comprises of the Amonkhet, Ixalan, and Kaladesh blocks.

2. Legacy

This format is open to cards from different sets that can legally be included in constructed tournaments. Its current form began in 2004, eliminating some cards to keep the power division competitive.

3. Modern

Comic ShopThe modern format offers an alternative to players who may not have easy access to the reserved list from legacy. This type does have its own banned list based on the cards’ power levels.

4. Vintage

This is the only category that includes a list of restricted cards in the set. It also has a long list of banned cards, omitted on the basis of their manual abilities and ante.

1. Sealed Deck

According to the rules, each contestant gets the opportunity to come up with a deck with six booster packs. The pack distribution and function can vary based on the sets included.

2. Booster Draft

This format typically involves eight players, all of whom are given three booster packs. Upon opening the pack, players can select one card and pass the rest to their left. The passing of cards continues until all the boosters have been taken. Doing so gives each player 40 cards to begin the game with.
