When your little one comes to you in the middle of the night with a toothache, you might be faced with treating the problem on your own until taking them to a children’s dentist in the morning. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to alleviate your child’s discomfort. Below are three examples.

Home Toothache Treatment

1. Apply an Ice Pack

Ice helps to constrict blood vessels and quell nerve impulses, keeping inflammation, swelling, and pain to a minimum. If your child has a toothache, apply a covered ice pack to the outside portion of their jaw where the discomfort is occurring. Do this several times a day for about 15 minutes at a time.

2. Swish With Salt Water

Stuck food particles, tooth decay, and even gum infections can cause toothaches, so have your child swish their mouth with warm salt water. In addition to washing away food particles, salt water also helps kill bacteria and calm inflammation. During at-home treatment, write down what you have done to calm your little one’s symptoms so you can tell a children’s dentist.

3. Offer OTC Pain Relievers
