Losing control over a vehicle is a terrifying feeling, but it can happen if you aren’t vigilant about the condition of your brake system. To always maintain control of your vehicle, stay on top of brake repairs and maintenance, and attune yourself to indications that you need immediate servicing.

If you’re unfamiliar, however, here are some signs that you either need new brakes or at least a repair:

  • Pulling to One Side: If your vehicle pulls to one side while you’re trying to drive straight, it could indicate a potential problem, including malfunctioning brakes. For example, your brake pads could be wearing unevenly, in which case you’d need new pads and possibly other adjustments to ensure the new ones don’t wear unevenly. It’s also possible that your brake fluid is contaminated and requires replacement.

  • brake repairHigh-Pitched or Growling Noises: Brakes are designed to emit a high-pitched squeal when the pads need to be replaced. It’s intentionally annoying, as delaying replacement would lead to irreparable damage—and a much worse sound. If you ignore squealing brakes for too long, the high-pitched squeal will give way to the sound of metal calipers grinding against the metal brake disc, the friction from which can ruin your rotors and merit an expensive brake repair.

  • Slow Braking Behavior: Perhaps the most obvious sign your brakes need attention is if they become less effective. This behavior may also be accompanied by the pedal sinking down to the floor. Schedule a brake repair if your brakes get weaker, as they could stop working completely. Most likely, the cause of the problem is leaking brake fluid.
