If home exterior painting is on your spring project list, it’s important that you understand it’s a huge undertaking. It doesn’t only consist of painting, either — there are several steps that go into painting a house. Many people are unfamiliar with the painting process; fortunately, Genesis Pro Painting knows all about it, and they’ve put together some information on the prep work involved to help you better understand it.
Prep Work Before Exterior Painting
1. Pressure Wash
Pressure washing is more effective and efficient than hand washing. It’s not necessary to use cleaners, though — unless there is severe staining or mold. Let the exterior dry for at least one day before moving onto the next step.
2. Scrape Loose Paint
During the pressure washing process, some paint may have come loose, or some may have already been peeling. After your house is fully dry, this paint needs to be taken off with a sharp paint scraper. This is a time-consuming yet crucial step in the preparation process.
3. Fix Surface Damage
Any rotted or gouged surface flaws need to be repaired, whether it be with a wood repair patch, repair compound, or filler. Then, the repaired areas should be sanded.
4. Apply Primer
Whether primer needs to be applied to the entire exterior painting surface, or just to the repaired spots, depends on the integrity of the paint job that’s remaining on the house. Primer should always be applied to the entirety if the new paint color is drastically lighter than the old one, too.
5. Remove Caulk & Re-Caulk
Fill any cracked seams until the caulk overflows, then wipe it with a cloth. When performing this step, it’s important to use a paintable exterior caulk. Now your home is ready for you to begin painting.
