Your roof is one of the most important parts of your house, and, when something is wrong, your home will pay the price. It’s your job as the homeowner to pay attention. The sooner you discover a leaking roof and have it fixed, the less expensive and destructive damage you’ll have to deal with. Here are a few common signs your roof has a leak.

What Are the Signs of a Leaking Roof?

1. Warped Shingles

Buckling shingles rise in the middle, while curling shingles rise on the ends. This problem typically begins with a small leak, and, when the roof decking underneath absorbs water, it moves and warps the shingles. The shingles are meant to act as a protective barrier, so this can lead to extensive damage if not fixed as soon as possible.

2. Water Stains

The result is one or more water stains on your ceiling and drywall, which look like a discolored spot, often with a ring of brown around it. The water stain makes the material soft to the touch and might cause it to bulge outwards.

3. Patchy Roof

While a patchy roof isn’t a sign of water damage, it does mean you might have a leak. Some common issues of a problematic roof include missing shingles, damaged flashing, or overflowing gutters. Having a roof inspection done at least once a year will catch these problems, ideally before they lead to a leak.
