Chilton B. has been a counselor at Camp Walt Whitman in New England for the past three years. He’s had many memorable experiences as a staff member at the summer camp, but one story, in particular, stands out for him. Below is a summary of the time he took his bunk on the ultimate adventure: to the infamous Twins and Bonds traverse.
The First Day
After he and his summer camp group had packed up all their gear, they were dropped off at the base of the mountains. Upon arrival, they immediately began their climb. They pushed through numerous tough spots, encouraging each other to stay positive. Once they reached the top, they were rewarded with priceless views and the formation of real friendships.
The Second Day
When they set up camp and cooked dinner that night, they did so as a team. After their meal, they enjoyed a stunning sunset before bed. The next day, they explored tall cliffs; they were so high, they could taste a cloud. After setting up camp that night, there was a major storm, but Chilton and his campers maintained a positive attitude throughout the entire experience.
The Final Day
They spent the next day hiking down the mountain and swimming in the river before they were picked up by the summer camp. On the trip back, the whole group celebrated the adventure with a pizza stop. According to Chilton, “The traverse was magical in many ways. It made us thankful for the little things we have and made us appreciate what this world has to offer. We learned to look at the positives when things didn’t go the way we planned. There was a ton of teamwork when we climbed multiple mountains, and everyone encouraged each other through the difficult parts.”
