Tips to Fix Low Water Pressure

If the pressure is low in the whole house or water system, possible causes could be:

  1. A faulty pressure reducing valve(PRV) or shut off valve within the system which has “dropped” or is blocked.
  2. Older galvanized or other piping which may be clogged with rust or debris.
  3. In some cases a required check valve on the main line or meter pit which has failed.
  4. Heavy usage within the water purveyor’s system – IE – summer, when irrigation systems are operating at the same time.
  5. Low pressure on hot water ONLY- clogged water heater connection pipes, a faulty shut off valve, or a heater which is full of sediment.
  6. Work on MAIN waterlines by others outside of the home – check with local water purveyor.

Low pressure on individual fixtures:

  1. Clogged aerator screens or shower heads which are blocked by dirt and debris.
  2. Faulty shut off valves @ the fixture.
  3. Galvanized or other older pipes serving the fixture only which are clogged with debris or rust.
  4. On shower/ tub faucets, faulty pressure balancing or thermostatic cartridges which allow only hot or cold water at a diminished flow.
  5. Debris within the fixture itself which may require replacement.

A professional plumbing contractor should be able to evaluate and repair any and all of these issues.
