When you need to restore your smile, tooth implants are the ideal solution. These titanium posts act like a tooth root and allow your dentist to surgically mount replacement teeth or a bridge in the spot where you’re missing one or more teeth. With several tooth implant procedures available, it can be tough to determine which one is right for you. BridgeView Dental Group in Kodiak, AK, explains the three most common that they perform.

Your Guide to Choosing Tooth Implants

Single Tooth Implants

This is the ideal option for patients who only need to replace a single missing tooth or multiple teeth in different areas of the mouth. This procedure requires a strong jaw with enough bone to hold and support the implant. The natural teeth and supporting tissues surrounding the implant must also be in healthy condition.

The titanium implant is first placed in the upper or lower jawbone, where it will take a few weeks to fuse with your bone. An abutment is then attached to the implant with a screw to mimic the shape of your natural teeth. Finally, a crown (typically made from porcelain) is screwed or cemented to the abutment.

Implant Supported Bridges

This procedure is ideal for patients that don’t have enough jawbone to support an implant. It’s also well suited for patients who grind or clench their teeth, which can put unnecessary pressure on implants and cause damage.

During this procedure, one implant is placed in the jawbone for each missing tooth. After screwing an abutment onto the implant, your dentist will add the restoration. During this procedure, the restoration is a series of crowns that are connected to form a bridge.

Implant Supported Denture

When you need to replace all of your teeth or the entirety of your upper or lower jaw, your dentist might suggest an implant-supported denture. While regular dentures rest on the gums, this treatment option uses special attachments that allow dentures to snap or screw into place.

The ideal candidate for an implant-supported denture will have a strong, healthy jaw that will support the implant. There are two types to choose from:

  • Bar-retained Dentures: These devices feature a thin metal bar that is attached to 2-5 implants placed in your jawbone. An attachment method, such as clips, are fitted to the bar to allow the denture to clip securely in place.
  • Ball-retained Dentures: This option involves fitting a ball-shaped metal stud attachment to each implant. These are designed to fit into sockets on the denture, allowing it to be snapped into place.
