Responsible for filtering the liquid sewage that flows from a septic tank, the leach field is an essential part of the wastewater treatment process. It’s comprised of carefully laid perforated pipes and particular amounts of gravel and soil, designed to remove contaminants. Because these underground contents are so deliberately deposited, great caution needs to be taken to avoid major problems.

5 Reasons Leach Fields Fail

1. Poorly Maintained Septic Tank

Septic tanks don’t require much maintenance, aside from pumping and cleaning, but it must be done regularly. The exact frequency will depend on the property and how large your family is, but it’s usually every two or three years.

2. Oversaturation

3. Encroaching Roots

Aside from the ground covering, the leach field and at least 30 feet of the surrounding perimeter should be free and clear of any plants, especially trees or shrubs. Roots can grow deep, wide, and strong, potentially puncturing the field.

4. Heavy Machinery

With its great expanse, you might be tempted to utilize your empty yard for parking your car or ATV, but that will only disrupt the filtration process happening below. Never drive or park any type of heavy machine over the leach field to avoid crushing or blocking the septic line.

5. Nearby Construction

Any proposed construction or repair work on or near your property should be carefully planned so that it won’t affect the leach field. Just like it is with plants, a distance of 30 feet is a good rule, but it depends on the project. Always consult a septic professional before any construction begins to ensure your system won’t be affected.
