After a loved one has died and the cremation services are complete, the next step is to decide where the final resting place of their ashes will be. Loved ones may have made special requests prior to their passing, such as a water scattering or being placed in a favorite location. However, if they didn’t, the following are five ideas for releasing ashes and how to go about it safely.

Ideas for Scattering Ashes

1. Sky

Since cremains are not considered hazardous, you can scatter ashes on the wind as long as you don’t drop the urn as well, which poses a danger to anything below. When casting ashes in the air, note the direction the wind is blowing, ensuring they move downwind of you and anyone else in the area. You can also choose to release cremains from a plane. There are professional companies that offer this option.

2. Special Location

A great way to honor a loved one is to choose a location that was special to them. It may be their home, or it could be a favorite vacation spot. Wherever it is, check the legal requirements. If it is private property, you must get permission from the owner. If it is a public area, find out any permits or ordinances for such ceremonies. Also, try to be discreet to respect others in the area.

3. Body of Water

Ocean scatterings are a popular choice and make for a beautiful farewell. The Clean Water Act dictates you must be at least three nautical miles from shore, and the water must be a minimum of 600 feet deep. The urn must be disposed of separately, especially if it is not biodegradable or water soluble. You must also notify the EPA within 30 days, and you cannot scatter on beaches or in wading pools. For smaller bodies of water, contact the state for permission and regulations.

4. Parks & Gardens

cremation servicesSome cemeteries have gardens designed for this purpose, giving you a beautiful, serene location for a memorial after the cremation service. Other garden options include trenching, which means placing the cremains in a hole, letting them become one with the soil. You can also encircle a tree or mix the ashes with wildflower seeds to grow a special garden.

5. Fireworks

If your loved one’s personality was daring and exciting, consider launching their ashes in a fireworks display for a dynamic tribute. There are companies that will create custom fireworks that include cremains. Always check with your area’s laws on firework launches and employ safe practices when working with anything explosive.
