Funerals can be sensitive events. Families and friends are grieving, and those closest to the deceased deserve to have everyone attending conduct themselves with courtesy, respect, and compassion. It can sometimes be challenging to know what is and isn’t appropriate during these proceedings. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t do during a funeral.

Do:

Show up early.

Funeral attendees should show as much respect for the bereaved as they can. One way to do that is to show up for the funeral 10 to 15 minutes before it starts. In addition to demonstrating your commitment to the service, arriving early gives you time to offer condolences and speak with other guests. If you’re not sure where to sit, go to the middle or back, as the first few rows are usually reserved.

Keep your phone off.

During funeral ceremonies, which typically take around one to two hours, keep your phone in your pocket and on silent or turned off. The ring of a call or the chime of a text message will distract from the service. You should also refrain from snapping any photos.

Don't:

Use any social media.

You don't know how the deceased's loved ones feel about publicizing the funeral. Don't comment on the funeral or your whereabouts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media platform.

Feel uncomfortable about religion.

Just because you're not Catholic doesn't mean you can't attend a traditional Catholic funeral. Don't feel apprehensive about attending or pressured into participating in a custom you’re uncomfortable with. Remember, the most important thing for those holding the ceremony is that you be there.
