From preventing mold growth to lowering a home’s energy costs, basement waterproofing has many benefits. Instead of rushing into the process, however, there are considerations that should be taken in account when planning the project. Because certain types of weather can affect the basement waterproofing process both positively and negatively, it’s important to understand these factors so the work can be scheduled accordingly.

Cold Weather

basement waterproofingThe first type of weather that can affect the basement waterproofing process is the cold. When the temperature plummets during the winter months, work outside your home can be affected in several different ways. Because the cold causes cracks in concrete to shrink, winter is actually the best time for polyurethane injections. The shrunken concrete opens up any cracks to their maximum width, making the polyurethane injections cover the whole crack without worry of stretching later on.

While this is helpful, winter also makes any kind of traditional excavation much more difficult due to the frozen ground. The risk of frost damage and cave-ins is greatly increased because of these conditions.

Rain

While winter weather only impacts outdoor projects, rain can affect both indoor and outdoor tasks. Rainy weather causes cracks to leak, preventing epoxy from attaching to surfaces. Muddy and moist conditions also cause the risk of cave-ins to spike.

Because each of these types of weather affect the project in different ways, it’s best to try to schedule basement waterproofing at a time when there’s little chance of either. The best you can do is work with your contractor to choose a time frame with a low probability of rain during a time with temperate conditions. Thanks to the project’s many benefits, however, dealing with the tricky scheduling is well worth the trouble.
