The weather’s getting warmer, and that means more time you can spend in the pool! As a pool owner, you know that regular maintenance helps you get the most out of your pool, but did you ever think about how much water actually goes into it? For years, M & M Pool Services has been providing pool cleaning and maintenance services throughout Oahu, and, in celebration of Water Conservation Month this April, they'd like to offer some helpful pool tips.

Your pool may need a lot of water, but here are some ways to cut back on excess use:

  • Cover your pool when not in use. A properly-fitted pool cover can prevent up to 95% of water evaporation. Without a cover, your pool will lose approximately an inch of water each week. This adds up to 7,000 gallons of lost water!
  • Check for leaks. If you find yourself refilling your pool more than normal, you may have a leak. One method of determining a leak is to mark the water line with a piece of tape or grease pencil. Check the water level against the mark 24 hours later. There should be no more than a quarter inch difference. If your pool has a leak, be sure to call a professional for repairs.
  • Lower the water level in your pool. This not only means you use less water to fill the pool, but it prevents water loss from excessive splashing. Try to keep the water about halfway up the pool skimmer opening.
  • Drain your pool only when it’s necessary. Many pool owners like to start the season with a scrubbed pool and fresh water. If you have been properly maintaining your pool, this is not necessary. The only times you will need to completely drain your pool is for repairs or renovations.

Proper pool cleanings and equipment maintenance will also help prevent water waste. Call M & M Pool Services at (808) 375-6816 to schedule your next pool maintenance. You can also visit their website for a full list of their pool services.
