Though they are two distinct medical specialties, many women confuse the roles of gynecologist and obstetrician. While some health care providers specialize in just one area, others specialize in both. This often causes much of the confusion experienced by patients, who unknowingly group the specialties into one area of expertise. To better understand the difference between gynecology and obstetrics, take advantage of the following guide.

Obstetrics

obstetricsThis specialty focuses on providing medical care to women and their unborn children throughout pregnancy and birth. The physician is trained to care for the unborn fetus, ensuring the baby is of sound health throughout the pregnancy. They may also provide post-natal care to the mother, as recovery is just as important as the phases leading up to it. Obstetricians perform a variety of procedures, including a cesarean section—when vaginal birth is not safe or possible and the baby must be removed from the womb through surgery.

Gynecology

As a much more generic specialty, gynecology refers to the treatment of conditions involving the female reproductive system, which includes the vagina, uterus, ovaries, and cervix. Many of these physicians are also trained to care for the bladder, bowel, and intestines of women.

A gynecologist plays a critical role in a woman’s life, as it’s highly recommended to schedule a pap smear once a year. This procedure can catch early cellular abnormalities that indicate HPV, a virus linked with cervical cancer. Gynecologists also perform other procedures, including biopsy, hysterectomy, and laparoscopy.
