If you are experiencing pain in or around your tooth, this could be a sign of tooth decay. Once the infection has reached the pulp of your tooth, the only way to save it is through a root canal. While this may sound nerve-wracking, understanding how the procedure works will help to ease your anxiety when it comes time for your appointment. Below, the friendly team at Michael Kinsley, DMD Dentistry at Houston Lake in Perry, GA, are here to discuss what you can expect.

Local Anesthesia

First, the dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the tooth and the area surrounding it. While you may feel a pinch where the needle is inserted, it will only last a second. Once the area is numb, a dental dam will be placed over the area to isolate the tooth and keep it dry during the procedure.

Drilling the Hole

root canalThe next step is to remove the infected pulp from the tooth. A small drill is used to create an opening in the top of the tooth, and then the dentist will use a small files to drain the damaged pulp. They will also use a file to shape and clean the inner chamber of the tooth.

Filling the Tooth & Placing the Crown

After the chamber is dried, the dentist will fill it with a rubber-like material. They will then apply a temporary crown over the tooth.  After for a few weeks, you will return for the last appointment where your dentist will place the permanent crown.
