Many millennials prefer texting over talking. Though it may seem strange to some, texting has its benefits. You can share complex information more quickly and succinctly, such as addresses and long numbers. Additionally, you’re less likely to inconvenience the other person the way a phone call would. There’s still a time and a place for voice conversations, but overwhelmingly, the millennial generation prefers texting—and as a business owner, you can implement that into your marketing strategy and the way you interact with customers.

Many millennials grew up when it was customary to “screen” your calls from telemarketers—that is, not answer them unless you wanted to talk to the person on the other end. Sales calls are still not a good look for a business and can quickly turn off a millennial. The idea of having to make a decision over the phone isn’t realistic to this generation. Why buy something on the spot when you haven’t had a chance to weigh other options? They know that with enough online sleuthing, they can find what they want—so, why be pressured over the phone? The key to appealing to them is passive marketing. For example, you could let customers sign up for text alerts, advertising special deals or promotions, which gives them time to realize your service is worth their attention.

Information such as tracking numbers, dates, times, and phone numbers can easily get garbled over the airwaves, making it especially frustrating to write them down. If you want to appeal to millennials, give them the convenience of text-based services. They’ll appreciate options like text reminders, confirmations, and alerts, which they’ll perceive as being helpful rather than hindrances.
