When choosing a lock for your home, you can never be too safe. However, with so many available options, it can be challenging to determine the best one for you. Having served the Lorain and Cuyahoga, OH, counties for almost 40 years, Elyria Locksmith Service, Inc., is experienced in helping people find the right fit. Below, the locksmiths offer some insight to assist you in the endeavor.

Locksmiths on How to Choose a Deadbolt

1. Look at the Grade

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) issues measurable standards for door hardware to help the public understand the quality of the items they’re looking at. For deadbolt locks, they have three different grades that indicate their pull strength, how they can hold up to hammer strikes, and cycles. The top grade is labeled ANSI Grade 1, which is most appropriate for businesses, while ANSI Grade 2 deadbolts would be most appropriate for residents.

2. Ensure the Throw Is Longer Than an Inch

locksmithThe throw, or the bar that holds your door in the frame when you lock it, needs to be longer than an inch to be effective as a security measure. If it’s shorter than that, anyone can easily wiggle into a home by separating the door from the frame with a crowbar by an inch.

3. Pick Between Single or Double Cylinder Locks

Depending on your concerns, you’ll have to determine whether a single or double cylinder lock is appropriate for you. For example, if you have windows directly next to your entry, you could risk someone being able to open your door from inside using the window. In this case, choose a double cylinder that requires a key to unlock the door from inside and outside. A single cylinder may be a better option for those who want the convenience of being able to secure their door from inside without worrying about losing their key and having to update the hardware.
