Summertime is just around the corner, with warm weather finally bringing an opportunity to enjoy all your favorite outdoor activities. However, the summer months also bring an increase in sun exposure, which is the leading risk factor for skin cancer.

The experts at Heibel Dermatology, one of Lincoln's leading skin care clinics, urge you to exercise caution whenever you step outside, and they'd like to offer a few tips to help you enjoy your days in the sun safely:

  • Use water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15, even on overcast days. Some of the sun's most harmful UV rays can penetrate cloud cover, leading to skin damage without your knowledge. Re-apply your sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
  • Try to avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. A good rule of thumb is to find some shade, or to stay indoors if your shadow is shorter than you.
  • Pay special attention to your kids, keeping them in the shade, if possible, and re-applying their sunscreen regularly.
  • Water, sand, and snow can reflect harmful UV rays, so exercise caution when spending time at the beach or in the mountains.
  • Check your body regularly for changes in your skin, especially abnormal moles and other growths. Skin cancer is almost always treatable if it's detected in the early stages.
  • Avoid tanning beds, since unnecessary UV exposure is a definite cancer risk.
