This year alone up to 13,240 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer. Early detection is crucial for getting effective treatment, and pap smears are the best way to locate it in its first stages. That’s why the gynecologists at Advanced OB-GYN Services emphasize the importance of undergoing routine tests to patients in St. Peters and Bridgeton, MO. Along with other gynecological exams, they play a vital role in women’s health and should be conducted at regular intervals throughout one’s life.

What Happens During a Pap Smear?

A gynecologist will take a sample of cervical cells to test for abnormalities. You’ll be asked to lie on an examination table and place your feet into stirrups. Your doctor will insert a device called a speculum into your vagina, which provides better access to your cervix. The sample is taken with a swab and sent to a lab for testing. The entire process usually takes about twenty minutes.

How Often Should You Have This Test?

gynecologistIt’s recommended that women begin receiving pap smears as early as 21, even though cervical cancer affects middle-aged women the most. How often you should have the test typically depends on your age, your health, and your level of sexual activity.

From 21 to 29, pap smears should occur every three years. From age 30 to 65 you should get them every three to five years unless testing brings back abnormal results; in this case, it may be recommended that you have the test on a yearly basis. For women 65 and older, pap smears may no longer be necessary based on their past health history.

If you’re overdue for a pap smear, visit your doctor as soon as possible for peace of mind.
