Today, we know asphalt to be a common paving material for resurfacing and protecting the roadways. However, have you ever stopped to think where asphalt paving began? The paving process has evolved over the years and can be traced back as far as the seventh century BC in Babylon. To understand how today’s asphalt installation process works, it’s best to start from the very beginning.

Below are historical records of how asphalt paving has evolved:

  • 615 BCE: Paved roads were a foreign concept before the seventh century in Babylon. At this time, the very first roads were paved with asphalt and burned brick. The pavement was designed to make for easier transportation for King Nabopolassar, lining the procession Street of Babylon, which started from his palace and wound all the way to the north wall of the city.
  • The 1800’s: By the 1800’s, asphalt had made its way to Europe, where John Metcalf built 80 miles of roadways with the intent of improving drainage. He used large stones and a layer of gravel to encourage water to seep down below the surface and to retain a dry, smooth surface for transportation. Later, John Loudon McAdam introduced melted tar into the paving process. By 1870, America had its first asphalt-paved road.
  • asphaltThe 20th Century: As the automobile industry began to boom, there was a major need for road repair and smoother streets. Asphalt plants began to crop up all over the country, and soon, Congress had dedicated a $51 billion loan for new roadway construction. At this time, they also designed larger, more powerful asphalt creation machines.
  • Modern Day: Since 1960, asphalt innovations have continued to rise, focusing on eco-friendly improvements. Plants have become much cleaner and economical, and asphalt is now one of the most recycled materials on the planet.
