Asbestos is a nearly indestructible fiber that was once commonly used in insulation, roofing materials, and many household items. It was removed from most manufactured products after it was found to cause a rare kind of cancer called mesothelioma. Although federal law restricts new products from containing more than 1% asbestos, it’s still found in some today. Here are a few of the things in which asbestos has been found.
3 Products That May Contain Asbestos
1. Home Appliances
Until 1980, most hairdryers were made with asbestos, and some manufactured recently have been shown to contain it. Crockpots and popcorn poppers are two kitchen appliances that have been tested and found to have asbestos, and so have space heaters and wood-burning stoves. It’s not used in as many appliances now, but if you hang on to old appliances or are an antiques collector, pay special attention to items such as irons, as they commonly contained asbestos.
Some children’s glitter makeup has been contaminated with asbestos, and it’s been found in facial and baby powder, too. Makeup ingredients should be checked for ingredients like talc and parabens; these are commonly found to be contaminated with asbestos. They can be found in foundations, blushes, and eyeshadow.
3. Protective Clothing & Coatings
Protective clothing and coatings have been shown to contain traces of asbestos. This includes welding and lab gloves, aprons, and fire blankets. Contaminants can also be found in fire doors, fireproofing cement and materials, and weather coating. Since asbestos is fire-resistant, it was once used in many fire-retardant materials.
