It can feel nearly impossible some days to get kids excited about brushing and flossing. Finding ways to make oral hygiene a fun activity instead of a chore is key to building lifelong habits, according to pediatric dentist Dr. Dean T. Sueda, DDS. At his Honolulu, HI, office, he works closely with parents to make dental care exciting for kids. Below are his top five tips to do this at home.

How to Get Kids Excited About Brushing & Flossing

1. Play a Brushing Song

It’s important for kids to brush for a full two minutes twice a day. You can use a timer, but if you want to make things a little more fun, find a song that’s two minutes long and let that be their “brushing song.” Play it every time they clean their teeth and they’ll dance and wiggle their way to a beautiful smile.

2. Use a Reward System

Many pediatric dentists, including Dr. Sueda, recommend using a reward system. Keep a brushing and flossing calendar, and give your kids a sticker each time they brush and floss. Once they get to a certain number of stickers, give them a larger reward, like a new toy. You can also use this as a report card of sorts that kids can bring in to their dentist to show off their progress.

3. Let Them Pick a Toothbrush

Kids are more likely to get excited about brushing their teeth when they’ve got a superhero or princess toothbrush to use. Bring them to the store with you so they can pick one for themselves.

4. Buy Interesting Toothpaste Flavors

Most adults prefer the minty toothpaste flavors, but children may want something a little different. Fortunately, most children’s toothpastes come in flavors like strawberry, watermelon, and bubblegum. Let them pick the flavor they like most or buy a couple options so they can switch it up from day to day.

5. Do It Together

pediatric dentists When your little ones see you brushing and flossing your teeth, they’ll want to do it, too. Plus, practicing good oral hygiene together gives you a few minutes of uninterrupted bonding time. You can dance to your brushing song and make silly faces while working toward a healthy mouth.

If getting your kids to brush and floss their teeth every day is a struggle, try implementing one or more of the above tips. If you’re still having trouble, pediatric dentist Dr. Sueda can help you troubleshoot or see if there’s an underlying issue at work. Whether your child needs preventive dentistry, orthodontics, or emergency dental care, his compassionate staff can help.
