When you have a dental emergency, it’s essential to visit a dentist right away. The sooner you get treatment for a dental injury, the better your outcome is likely to be. If you experience any of the following problems, make sure to get treatment as soon as possible.

3 Types of Dental Emergencies

1. Broken Tooth

Whether due to an impact or biting down on the wrong food, a broken tooth can be painful and provide an avenue for bacteria to attack the vulnerable soft tissues inside the tooth. If it’s only a minor chip, you can simply bring it up with the dentist at your next scheduled visit. However, if your tooth is deeply cracked or broken, find the missing piece if you can, and then bring it to an emergency dentist the same day.

2. Toothache

DentistYour teeth are mostly composed of enamel and dentin, which cannot feel pain. Only the soft inner portion of your tooth has nerves. For this reason, if you are feeling pain due to a cavity or infection, it is likely at an advanced stage already. The sooner you can get to a dentist for an oral exam, the less likely major, invasive treatment such as a root canal will be needed.

3. Tooth Loss

When your tooth is significantly loosened in its socket or comes out entirely, it’s called tooth avulsion. When you have an avulsed tooth, the dentist may still be able to save the tooth and its nerve, but every minute counts. Find the tooth, rinse it with saliva or milk (not water), and put it in your mouth to keep it moist as you go directly to the dentist.

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, a quick response may save your tooth and prevent further complications from the injury. Watch out for these serious conditions and respond immediately when you notice them.
