A eulogy is a speech given, oftentimes at a funeral, in praise of someone who has passed away. Because of the highly emotional situation, these can be incredibly difficult to write. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t do when writing your speech.

Do:

Make it personal.

The purpose of a eulogy is to share how a person touched your life, so make it personal. This may make it more difficult to share. However, it will allow others to connect with you and will give an honest tribute to your lost loved one. Share a story or two that shows their best characteristics. Mention how they've affected you and made you better.

Edit.

Once you have written out everything you want to say, go over it several times and edit your work. Ask someone you trust to read it over as well. Trim excess words and add proper punctuation. Afterward, practice reading it aloud to see how it feels on your tongue. The more concise and natural-sounding it is, the easier it will be to deliver it with eloquence and sincerity.

Don't:

Write excessively.

Make jokes.

It is fine to share a funny story, but keep in mind that everyone gathered at the funeral home is in mourning. This is a time where friends and family members are allowed to feel the depth of their sadness and grieve, leading the way to healing. Don't cover up your sorrow with too many jokes. Your emotions are serious, and your speech should reflect that.
