What First-Timers Can Expect From Summer Camp, Piermont, New Hampshire

Heading off to summer camp is an age-old rite of passage in a kid’s developmental years. At Camp Walt Whitman in New England, that importance isn’t lost for one second. With a foundation of strong values and a commitment to personal growth, respect, and, of course, fun, this spot is the premier destination for all young New Englanders. But new campers may have some questions about the experience. Here a quick guide of what to expect during your first getaway.

What Should a First-Timer Expect From Summer Camp?

1. Your Big Brother or Sister Will Be Your Guide

Any trepidation you may be feeling before the big day will be gone once your big brother or sister gives you a call in early June. These 13-year-old campers are well versed in camp life and will tell you what to expect, including all of the fun activities you’ll soon be participating in. This is the perfect chance to ask any questions you may have and a surefire way to make your first camp friend.

You’ll also get a call from your Unit Leader. These folks have been camp counselors for several summers and will be a great resource for any additional questions or concerns. The Unit Leader will be excited to meet you and will always be there if you need anything during your stay.

2. Your Perfect Bunkmates & Counselors Are Chosen for You

summer campWith your parent’s help, you’ll submit a biography during the early spring. With information about you, such as your favorite activities, the summer camp will place you in a cabin that has kids you’re sure to become good friends with. Any special considerations will also be included in the biography so the camp can tailor the experience as much as possible to ensure a fantastic time.

3. You’ll Make Friends Before You Even Arrive

Before you leave for summer camp, you’ll be sent a special T-shirt that lets campers and counselors know it’s your first time. This will make it super easy for people to meet you and introduce themselves! With the shirt and the fun bus ride—packed with games, movies, and stories to share—you’ll make good friends before you even set foot on the campgrounds.

4. It’s Okay to Feel Homesick

Homesickness is common with first-timers, and there’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. If you start to feel blue, your fellow campers will always help you cheer up. The staff’s goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible so you start to think of the camp as a second home.

Heading off to summer camp for the first time might be a little nerve-wracking, but those worries will go away quickly thanks to the welcoming environment of Camp Walt Whitman. For more information about your first getaway experience, call (800) 657-8282 or visit the website today.
