While winter is filled with skating, sledding, and other fun outdoor activities, the freezing temperatures mark the end of pool season. With frigid weather setting in, however, the pool requires close attention. The cold and snow can damage both the equipment and the plumbing, which makes proper swimming pool maintenance vital. Here’s some helpful advice on responding to freezing outdoor temperatures.

Your Guide to Winter Swimming Pool Maintenance

1. Watch the Water Levels

Regardless of the season, pools require specific water levels, so always keep an eye on them. Ideally, the water should remain around the middle of the skimmer. While a protective cover will prevent snow and ice from affecting those levels, it needs to be rolled back periodically so the amount of water can be checked. If you notice it went down, feel free to add more with your garden hose.

Furthermore, the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and chlorine are all vital components of water monitoring, so read your owner’s manual carefully, and maintain those levels all season. That way, when the warmer weather finally arrives, you won’t need to do heavy-duty swimming pool maintenance.

2. Clean & Run the Filter

Without a clean one, the water flow could halt during the winter, causing the liquid levels to rise or fall unevenly. Also, run the filter continuously. Moving water is less likely to freeze and create problems.

3. Protect the Pump

Pumps should stay running all winter; this is another step that prevents the water from freezing. With variable speed pumps, you’ll need to adjust the water flow, as the speed won’t automatically reset to accommodate the freezing temperatures. If you want, you can look for a product that will detect climate changes and adjust the pump speed accordingly.
