With the warmer months approaching, you look forward to cold drinks and frozen treats. But it’s always disappointing when you find out your refrigerator isn’t keeping your food as cold as it should. Carolina Appliance Service has been repairing refrigerators and other major appliances in North Carolina since 1993, and they have tips on why your refrigerator may not be cooling properly.

Two things you can do is to make sure your refrigerator is plugged in all the way, and the thermostat in the refrigerator is set to the correct temperature. But what if your fridge still isn’t working the right way?

  • Make sure your door gaskets are sealing properly. The gaskets form an air-tight seal to contain the cold air in your fridge, and to keep the warm air out. Any rips or tears in the gasket means the seal has been compromised, and will need to be replaced by a qualified repairman.
  • Check to see if the condenser coils are dirty. Condenser coils are more likely to get dirty when the surrounding area is dusty, or when pets shed frequently. When dust and dirt accumulate on the condenser coils, it prevents the refrigerator from working efficiently. Your refrigerator’s condenser coils should be cleaned regularly to avoid the buildup of dust. Call your refrigerator technician to find out about keeping your condenser coils clean.
  • Make sure the light goes off when the door is closed. If the light stays on when the door is shut, it will heat up the interior of your refrigerator, and make it warmer that it should. You can check with most models by slowly closing the door and watching to see if the light turns off. If the light remains lit, speak to a repairman for solutions.

Your refrigerator needs regular maintenance to run at its most efficient. Call Carolina Appliance Service at (704) 847-0004 to schedule an appointment, or visit their website for a full list of services.
