As a homeowner, you want to protect the investment you’ve made in your residence and keep it looking beautiful. However, some features can be difficult to clean without damaging them. This is particularly true of natural stone countertops. Fortunately, there are a few tried-and-true tricks you can use to ensure you don’t harm your beautiful granite, marble, or quartz counters.

How to Maintain Your Natural Stone Countertops

Cleaning

Cleaning natural stone is simple: All you need are warm water, plain dish detergent, and a soft cloth. Wipe the surface down, and clean up any excess water rather than allowing it to air dry. When you need to do a deeper clean, purchase a spray made especially for your countertop material. You can use a baking soda paste to remove tough stains, but never use anything even mildly abrasive or acidic. In other words, skip the steel wool sponges, lemon juice, and vinegar.

Sealing

Use a spray-on products as directed once every month to keep your countertops from getting stained. Granite counters are typically sealed before or just after installation, and the sealant only needs to be reapplied once a year. Quartz requires the least maintenance: It is naturally heat- and stain-resistant and doesn’t need to be sealed.
