A Guide to Quartz & Quartzite Countertops, Honolulu, Hawaii

As you begin shopping for countertops, you’ll find you have a lot of stylish materials to choose from. Two of the most popular choices are quartz and quartzite. But what’s the difference between the two materials? Before you settle on one option, here’s a guide to the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Quartz is an engineered countertop created from loose quartz, natural silicon dioxide, and manmade materials. Though it’s engineered, it looks natural. The mixture is blended with a binder before it’s formed into a countertop, and pigment can be added. Because of this, it’s available in a wide range of colors.

Quartz is a durable material, but due to the plastic in the mixture it can melt at temperatures over 300 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s also easy to maintain since you can wipe it down with a damp cloth or use household cleaners on it.

countertopsQuartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic stone, which forms when sandstone is put under extreme heat and pressure. It’s a white or gray material, but it can have some reddish hues in it due to iron oxide. The stone is heat-resistant and durable, even harder than granite.

Sharp objects can scratch quartzite, however, so always use a cutting board. The stone will also need to be sealed on an annual basis to prevent the stone from getting stained. Fortunately, cleaning quartzite is simple, making it ideal for homeowners who want the look of marble but with less maintenance.

Both materials are practical options and make for attractive countertops, so your choice should depend on your preferences.
