Whether you’re a weekend warrior or seasoned professional, there’s always a risk of injury when engaging in a sport. While some injuries happen in the blink of an eye, others occur due to repetitive motion and wear over an extended period. Below, sports medicine doctor Peter A. Matsuura, MD, in Hilo, HI, discusses several of the most common sports injuries.

3 Sports Injuries Explained

1. Concussion

Although concussions are often associated with contact sports such as soccer, hockey, boxing and football, they are also common in athletes participating in gymnastics and skiing. Symptoms of a concussion include loss of balance, nausea, dizziness, headaches, and vision disturbance as well as loss of consciousness. While most athletes bounce back from a concussion within a matter of weeks, multiple concussions may result in permanent damage.

2. ACL Tear

The ALC, or anterior cruciate ligament, is one of four main ligaments stabilizing the knee. Common causes of ACL tears during sports play include slowing down and attempting to pivot, cut, or change direction, such as when playing football, soccer, or basketball. Symptoms of an ACL tear include swelling, difficulty walking, and a loud popping sensation in the knee. In many cases, an ACL tear will often require orthopedic surgery and several months of physical therapy to ensure a full and long-lasting recovery.

3. Shoulder Injuries

In most cases, these injuries can be attributed to repetitive motion, which loosens the group of muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder commonly known as the rotator cuff. Symptoms of a shoulder injury include slipping, weakness, pain, and stiffness. Although rest and pain medication are often viable treatment options, in extreme cases, shoulder surgery may be necessary.
