During the winter, homeowners take special care of their plants and irrigation to protect them from the low temperatures. What many forget is that their patios require extra winter care as well. Furniture that is designed for patios should be sheltered from the harsh weather outside, but it’s important to note that each piece should be handled differently.

Patio Protection 101: 3 Tips for Safeguarding Different Equipment

1. Wicker

Wicker furniture brings a laid-back, beachy look to many patios, but during the winter, this material faces some major challenges. When wicker furniture gets wet or is covered with snow, its fibers begin to expand. When the snow melts or the rain dries up, the fibers contract, which often leads to cracks or splitting. To avoid this, bring your wicker furniture indoors, where the temperature is more easily controlled. Placing the wicker pieces in your garage and covering them with a tarp or blanket will preserve the material through the winter.

2. Metal

Many homeowners choose metal furniture for their patios, as it provides unbeatable durability. While some assume that all metal can withstand the patioswinter elements, this is only partly true. Furniture that is made from steel is likely to rust and crack when exposed to snow or ice, making it another good candidate for indoor winter storage. Aluminum furniture, on the other hand, is strong enough to be left outdoors year-long. If you’re still concerned about your aluminum pieces, cover them with a waterproof tarp or move them under an awning.

3. Natural Materials

Patio furniture made from natural materials, like stone and wood, are often filled with tiny cracks and crevices that will store water. When temperatures drop below the freezing point, this water expands and causes damage. This includes fabric materials, like cotton, so be sure to protect your furniture cushions and pads during the winter by keeping them indoors, ideally inside the house where the temperature is mild.
