As a gun owner, learning how to clean your weapon is one of the most important tasks to learn. While specific upkeep procedures may differ from one model to another, most of them follow the same basic guidelines. Take a look at the steps involved in ensuring a well-maintained weapon.

4 Steps to Cleaning Your Gun

Take the Bolt Apart

Start by unloading the gun and taking the magazine out. Unscrew the components, like the extractor and ejector, and cleanse them with a soft brush. Follow it up by cleaning your weapon’s bolt with solvent and coating it with a light layer of lubricant.

Clean Out the Barrel

GunsOnce the bore is thoroughly clean, it’s time to focus on the muzzle and barrel. Start by dipping the brush in solvent and running it down the chamber side. You may need to repeat this process a few times if the firearm hasn't been cleaned in a while. Set the barrel down and let it rest for a while.

Remove the Junk From Barrel

Allowing the barrel to remain coated with solvent helps loosen the gunk and debris caught in the barrel. Bear in mind that it may require using several solvent-dipped pads to get out the carbon stuck to the weapon. While it may take a few solvent wipes, this step is generally enough for cleaning up a basic pistol. However, you may dust up any gunpowder remnants with help of a soft cloth for more detailed maintenance.

Lubricate the Pistol

Before the final step of putting the weapon together, take some time to oil its component with care. When applying the lubricant, take the same cautionary approach as you did with solvent. Use wipes to apply oil and spread it carefully around the gun components.
