3 Tips to Care for Succulents Like a Gardening Professional, Hilo, Hawaii

When it comes to gardening, there are a plethora of plants to choose from. One popular option is the succulent, which is adored for its low-maintenance routine and unique appearance. However, to enjoy this little piece of nature for as long as possible, there are a few important care steps you need to follow. To properly tend to your plant, consult the helpful guide below.

3 Tips for Succulent Care

1. Water

Succulents require a minimal amount of hydration, making it easy for people to overwater them. On average, though, this plant only needs to be fully soaked about once a week. However, if the soil feels completely dry between watering sessions, increase the schedule to twice a week. You can also use their leaves to tell if they’re hydrated—if you squeeze them, and they feel firm, the plant doesn’t need any water.

2. Soil

The succulent's soil should be well-draining. This ensures the water steadily infiltrates the plant, rather than pooling in the soil and drowning the roots. Gardening stores usually sell prepackaged options that are suitable for succulents—these are usually a half-and-half combination of air and solid mineral, with just a bit of organic matter. To test if your soil is well-draining, dig a hole that is 12-inches deep and wide. Then, fill it with water, and see how long it takes to drain. If it takes 10 minutes or less, it’s safe to use.

3. Sunlight

Succulents should receive anywhere from six to eight hours of indirect sunlight a day—direct rays can be too hot or harsh for them and may lead to brown spots, which indicate sunburn. A shaded area that provides adequate light but doesn’t receive direct exposure, such as a southern-facing window, is ideal.
