If you’re locked out of your car, locksmith and roadside assistance companies can help you get access so that you can get back on your way. But if they aren’t careful, they may damage your car in the process. Read on to find out what to watch for when you call for help with a lockout.

Will My Car Be Damaged?

Ideally, you shouldn’t receive any damage to your car when you receive lockout assistance. There are several methods to get into a locked car that are safe when done correctly. The problem occurs when the person unlocking the vehicle is rushed, inexperienced, or careless. In these cases, the car door may sustain damage.

Two Lockout Solutions

LockoutThere are two common ways to get into a locked vehicle: accessing the door’s inner mechanisms with a slim jim, or wedging the door open far enough to unlock it from the inside. Both options are effective and can be done without causing damage.

Slim Jim

A slim jim is a thin tool designed to slide between your window glass and the metal of the door. Once the tool is inside, it can be used to hook the door’s locking mechanism and unlock it. However, if used incorrectly, a slim jim can yank other components out of place. Watch to make sure your towing service technician is working carefully, without yanking or jerking the tool.

Wedge

The wedge method uses either an actual wedge or an inflatable tool to ease open the top corner of your car door. Most of the time, your door will simply spring back to its normal shape and position once the wedge is removed—but if the door bends too far, it may stay that way. Watch to make sure your technician only bends the door the minimum amount, and afterward, check to make sure the door closes correctly.

With appropriate caution, your lockout technician can avoid damage to your car. To make sure your tech will take proper care, rely on a trusted roadside assistance company to help with your lockout, and make sure to keep an eye out for any problems.
