Going to the vet for the first time can be downright stressful for both you and your pet. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Whether you’re headed in for a routine checkup or require emergency vet care, there are several do’s and don’ts you should know to make the experience go as smoothly as possible.

Do:

vetSecure Your Pet

All pets must be secured by a leash or carrier to ensure their safety, as well as that of other animals and their owners. While your dog or cat may act sweet and docile at home, there is no telling how they might react to a new environment—especially one filled with unfamiliar animals.

Bring Toys & Treats

A few treats or a chew toy can go a long way toward reducing your pet’s anxiety. You may also consider bringing a blanket to lay on top of the exam table. This will provide your pet with a familiar scent and extra traction during the examination.

Be Honest & Ask Questions

Honesty is always the best policy. Lying about your pet’s diet or how they were injured will make it more difficult for the veterinarian to diagnose and treat the condition. Provide the vet with a list of current medications your pet is taking and answer any questions to the best of your ability to ensure your pet receives adequate care.

Don’t:

Approach Other Animals

Vet offices are filled with cute and cuddly animals. Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing whether or not an animal is friendly, especially when they are experiencing pain or discomfort. Socializing with sick animals also places your pet at risk for contracting illnesses. As such, it’s best to keep your interactions limited to the veterinary staff.

Apply DIY Bandages

Applying a bandage incorrectly may cause serious harm to your pet or increase their risk of infection. Your veterinarian will administer any necessary dressings properly and provide you with specific instructions regarding aftercare to ensure a steady recovery.

Use Your Phone

While it’s perfectly acceptable to use your phone in the waiting room, it’s important to avoid using it once the examination begins. This will keep your attention fixed on your pet and ensure you’re able to remember any pertinent information provided by the vet.
