Although wiping your prescription eyeglasses or sunglasses with the corner of your shirt may be convenient, it is not the proper way to clean your lenses. In fact, this method damages the protective coating, which leaves permanent scratches and negatively affects your vision. Below, an eye doctor from Wing Eyecare in Cincinnati, OH, discusses the best ways to clean and maintain your eyeglasses.

Cleaning

You should always wipe your lenses wet, whether with glasses cleaning solution safe for No Glare coatings, or with water and mild dish soap. It’s always best to wipe wet lenses clean using a microfiber cloth.

These microfiber cloths can be hand-washed with mild dish soap and laid flat or hung to dry – don’t put them through the washer and dryer.

With the purchase of a pair of glasses, Wing Eyecare gives patients a complimentary microfiber cleaning cloth and a bottle of lens cleaner. In fact, we refill those bottles of cleaner in our offices free of charge!

Maintaining

Proper eyeglass storage is also essential to avoid scratches. Always place your glasses in a case when they’re not in use and avoid placing the lenses down on any hard surface. If you find yourself without a proper case, place your eyeglasses upside down with the temples—or arms—outstretched to keep them from falling onto the floor.
