After a storm, many HVAC contractors are overwhelmed with calls from home and business owners whose systems have been damaged. Depending on the type of weather event, several kinds of damage can occur. Progress Supply has been the go-to HVAC equipment company for Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton, OH, contractors since 1960. Here, these distributors explain four common issues you can expect to address after a storm.

4 Common HVAC Equipment Problems That Happen After a Storm

1. Dented Fins

Fallen debris or tree limbs may crash into metal fins and dent them, which can restrict air or refrigerant flow. The homeowner may not notice it immediately, but the damage can reduce energy efficiency and cause undue wear and tear on parts. If not fixed quickly, the problem can compound into a more severe problem, such as system overheating.

2. Damaged or Icy Coils

HVAC-equipmentHail is another culprit that can dent and damage outdoor units. The coils are particularly susceptible to damage from dirt, debris, and ice, as well. When the condenser coils are dirty or covered with leaves and other debris, it restricts airflow and prevents the heat coming out of the house from being released. The outside evaporator coils can also become coated with ice, making the system run continuously without cooling. This leads to overheating and, eventually, compressor failure.

3. Refrigerant Leaks

Falling tree limbs or temperature fluctuations can cause cracks or holes in the refrigeration lines, resulting in a leak. When the AC system loses refrigerant, it strains the system, causing it to work harder. Eventually, this will lead to overheating and AC failure.

4. Computer Damage

Most newer HVAC systems have delicate computer systems that allow them to work more efficiently, resulting in enhanced convenience for the operator. Lightning is a common factor in tornadoes and other severe storms, particularly in the summer. When lightning strikes a building, it can overload the electrical circuits and cause a power surge. When this occurs, the HVAC computers may be harmed.
